St Peters High School in Exeter are wholly embracing their UNESCO Associated School status with innovation and excitement!
From September 2009, the Humanities department have decided to give World Heritage Sites and Jurassic Coast a prime spot in their teaching programme. Geography is now being taught along with ICT, Learning to Learn (L2L) & Arabic in a rotation called the St Peter’s Keys. At the end of every unit, the pupils and staff will all meet together (60 students) to complete a joint project on Coasts. This programme of learning has been taught by the team of geography, ICT & L2L teachers. There are four joint projects that have been identified, and have been taught in succession from September 2009 to July 2010. These projects are:
- What are World Heritage Sites?
- Why is the Jurassic Coast special?
- How are our coastal landscapes created?
- What would you do at Pennington Point in Sidmouth?
Although the work allows focus on the geography content, it will also test different L2L and ICT skills namely: data handling, presentation using Photostory, animation using Fireworks and making films/voice inserts. The school programme is supported by the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site Team who have helped by giving talks to the pupils and organising trips out to the coast. The project also builds on the sustainable school link that St Peter’s High School maintains with All Saints School in Mtunthama, Malawi where pupils in both countries have explored issues associated with the management of tourism at their respective World Heritage Sites (Jurassic Coast and Lake Malawi National Park). On February 11th , Anjana Ford, Jurassic Coast Education Coordinator attended a prize giving ceremony at the school to recognise all the hard work that the pupils have put into the programme so far. The groups that produced the best pieces of work about the Jurassic Coast won a special prize where they will be able to visit Seaton on the Jurassic Coast for a day (ice creams included!).
