A new DVD resource package launched by Devon Education Services in partnership with the Jurassic Coast Team will bring a bit of reality to geography lessons in secondary schools across the country. Using film footage on the Jurassic Coast and interviews from a range of experts, the film explores the sensitive issues surrounding the protection of the World Heritage Site against the needs for coastal defences.
Using film footage on the Jurassic Coast and interviews from a range of experts, the film explores the sensitive issues surrounding the protection of the World Heritage Site against the needs for coastal defences. The first two chapters of the film focus on the geomorphological features of the Jurassic Coast and the geological story. The DVD examines the issues involved in fossil collecting and will form the basis of a new primary education package due out next year.
The latter part of the DVD focuses on the different types of coastal defences that occur along the coast and their impacts on the environment. In all chapters key people are interviewed, including Caroline and Derek whose houses are both threatened by coastal erosion and landslippage. The DVD results in an enquiry based at Key Stage 3, which asks the question ‘What should happen at Pennington Point?’. Teachers and pupils will have a chance to use the DVD and explore the resources provided on an accompanying CD in order to seek a resolution to the issue.
