Seventy students from seven secondary schools along the Jurassic Coast came together to showcase their findings of a year long research project at a high profile conference on March 11th at Kingston Maurward. Parents, local community members, councillors and representatives from various organisations were members of the 130 strong audience. The pupils had the opportunity of selecting a section of the Jurassic Coast and investigate four questions:
- Why is the coast special?
- How is the coast currently being managed?
- What challenges do the communities face with coastal change?
- What does the future hold for the selected stretch of coastline?
The pupil led project highlighted the innovative and refreshing ways in which the younger generation can both perceive and convey important world issues like coastal change to wider audiences. The pupils acted out dramatised scenes from Dragon’s Den, The Jeremy Kyle Show and The X Factor focusing on the topic of coastal change. This project has really highlighted the need for young people to be involved in future decision making that will inevitably affect their generation.
