Communities on the Jurassic Coast are being asked to share their memories of our shifting shores to help us better understand and adapt to future changes.
The Dorset and East Devon Coastal Change Pathfinder Project team wants people to send photographs, records and stories of past events such as big storms that have led to dramatic erosion.
In December, Dorset and Devon County Councils and their partners were awarded £376,500 from the Government’s Coastal Change Pathfinder Fund to explore how coastal communities can adapt to meet the challenges of coastal change.
The Dorset and East Devon Coastal Change Pathfinder Project has been set up to look at these challenges locally. The project team wants to work closely with coastal communities to explore these threats and opportunities in order to be better prepared for the future.
Between now and the end of September, the Pathfinder Project team is keen to hear from anyone who can contribute copies of photographs or written accounts of coastal erosion, flooding, storm events and changing coastal defences in the following areas:
- Swanage
- Ringstead
- Preston Beach Road and Bowleze Coveway, Weymouth
- Seatown
- Charmouth
- Sidmouth and Pennington Point
These will be used to illustrate how the coast has changed in the past and provide a foundation for visualisations of how the coast may change in the future.
Project coordinator, Rupert Lloyd, said:
Perhaps you have a photograph showing how one of these areas looked in the past, or showing a major storm or landslip? Maybe you can provide a written account of how the coast has changed in these settlements? These personal accounts will be invaluable to the project and we would love to hear from you.
