Go Jurassic Rangers paint ammonite baubles at the Christmas Party
Go Jurassic! Rangers recently wrapped up 2016 with a Christmas Party for members. Over 30 Rangers and their families gathered at Uplyme Village Hall for the party earlier this month, which featured a fossil-themed Pass the Parcel, dino-cupcake decorating, and a slide show from a local fossil expert. The Jurassic Coast Team’s Dr Anjana Ford even provided home-stitched ammonite baubles for Rangers to paint and take home to adorn their Christmas trees. To top things off, Rangers also wrote Christmas cards to their counterparts at Dinosaur National Monument in Colorado, USA.
The Christmas Party caps an exciting year of activities which began with the Dinosaur Sleepover in Dorchester in February, and took in a visit to the newly opened Seaton Jurassic, a dinosaur footprints walk, and a summer beach day at The Donkey Sanctuary. These events alternate with editions of the Go Jurassic! Rangers newsletter which is delivered to all members every two months. This is accompanied by a poster featuring a new Jurassic Coast species each time, drawn by Devon-based artist Peter Montgomery. The combination of events and mail packs means that both local children and those from further afield can join and be inspired by the Jurassic Coast’s unique treasures.
Guy Kerr from the Jurassic Coast Trust said, “It’s been a big year for our Go Jurassic Rangers. It’s encouraging to see children being so enthused about our incredible Jurassic Coast, and its stories of fossils, dinosaurs and rocks. We recently recruited Ranger number 200, 7 year-old Albie from Lyme Regis, which was a great milestone to pass. We now also have a number of families who are regular attendees of our events, and we look forward to seeing them, and our newer members, again next year.”
