Following the success of the Jurassic Coast banners that were on show in Exmouth in 2005, Seaton is now developing its own scheme to have Seaton banners.
Last autumn, Devon County Council installed new lighting columns along the seafront – these specifically had banner arms added to incorporate World Heritage Site gateway town banners. As an interim measure eight temporary banners were erected using part of one of the banners from Exmouth, along with the wording “Banner Project In Progress”. At the bottom of the banner there is a brief explanation that these are temporary banners pending the project with the schools and promoting it as a Seaton Visitor Centre Project. The banners were installed in September in time for the Youth Festival.
At the same time, the artist Jane Witheridge, who was involved with the banner project in Exmouth, was appointed to work with Axe Vale Community College and Seaton Primary School in preparing designs for the banners. The College have prepared designs for the seafront and the Primary School have prepared designs to replace the existing banners in the town centre. Both have adopted a “walk through time” theme; the College on the Jurassic Coast and the Primary School on Seaton as a town. Jane was working with over 100 pupils from each school through most of November, developing the designs for this exciting project.
Now the designs have been completed the banners will be fabricated and installed ready for this spring and will then be in place for the remainder of the season. The project is being supported by Devon County Council, East Devon District and Seaton Town Council in conjunction with the Jurassic Coast Team.
