Crinoids are plant-like animals, related to starfish and sea urchins. They had a habitat range from tropical to arctic waters, and live in deep seas today. This type had stems and roots and lived attached to driftwood floating in the Jurassic sea. When the wood became waterlogged, or the colony grew too heavy, the whole lot sank to the sea bed and became fossilised.
