Brittle Star

Exquisite stars

Look closely at these brittle stars – the detail is exquisite. Blocks of sandstone packed with brittle stars are very rare. They are found washed onto the beach which is why we’re not sure which strata level they originate from. This block is even more unusual as it has what looks like a burrow cutting right through the fossils.

You can also see some small ammonites amidst the brittle stars. These are Amaltheus, a very distinctive ammonite from the Lower Jurassic, Middle Lias.
