…and don’t miss a visit to Seaton Jurassic, the coast’s newest visitor attraction!
If you are heading to the Jurassic Coast this Easter, congratulations on choosing to visit England’s only natural World Heritage Site! This fabulous place is well known for its stunning scenery, beautiful beaches and fantastic fossils.
The weather may not do exactly what we want it to over Easter, but luckily there are some exciting indoor options available to you.
The newly opened Seaton Jurassic, in the East Devon town of Seaton, is a spectacular visitor attraction which takes you on a journey through time to discover the world of the Jurassic Coast. It’s the South West’s newest and most exciting day out and a must-do for anyone interested in geology and wildlife.
Find out about the other visitor centres, museums and attractions along the coast.
You’ll still want to head outdoors at some stage though… You’ve got your wellies and mac (and your suncream because the sun will shine) and you’re off to discover the wonders of the Jurassic Coast. Just remember, this coast looks like it does because of erosion. This is also why there is such a rich supply of fossils in places such as Charmouth and Lyme Regis. Erosion means that the coast is dynamic and is always on the move, especially during or after wet and wild weather.
You should always keep your wits about you, whether you are out walking, fossil hunting, having a picnic or taking selfies. It is easy to enjoy the Jurassic Coast without putting yourself or others at risk. Don’t forget:
- Always stay away from the cliffs (top and bottom ) – landslides and rock falls are more likely to happen after heavy rainfall or storms but can, and do, happen anytime
- Mud flows may extend across the beaches – be alert; they can look deceptively like the beach itself
- Never ignore a warning sign – they are there for your safety
- Check tide times before you set off on a beach walk or fossil hunting adventure to avoid being cut off
And finally, say hello to Stuart, our marvelous Fossil Warden, if you see him on the beaches of Charmouth and Lyme Regis – he’s there to help you get the most out of your trip (and he might even give you a fossil).
Have an egg-cellent Easter and enjoy the Jurassic Coast – safely!
