Five sixth formers from Queen Elizabeth’s represented the Jurassic Coast at a three day UNESCO World Heritage Youth Summit in Greenwich, London between 27th – 29th June. The students met 120 other young ambassador’s of World Heritage from sites around the UK including the Giant’s Causeway, Heart of Neolthic Orkney and Blaenavon Industrial Landscape. The students arrived to a big welcome by ten Greenwich Youth Hosts in the beautiful Painted Hall before enjoying a tour of the Greenwich Maritime World Heritage Site, the venue for the Olympic horseriding events. The students had the opportunity to make their own 3 minute film about the Jurassic Coast at Ravensbourne College, which is being shown at various big screens around London during the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Photos from the event and footage from the student’s films will also be showcased at the UNESCO Youth Summit 2012 exhibition held in the Exhibition Gallery at Discover Greenwich Visitor Centre between 18th July – 29th August 2012.
This conference is a culmination of a big three year project set up by the Jurassic Coast Team in 2009. We held the first Youth Summit conference in Lyme Regis in 2009, followed by one in 2010 hosted by New Lanark. The students made some fantastic links to other World Heritage Sites whilst in Greenwich and it truely was an experience to remember!
