The first winners of the new awards were announced at the recent Jurassic Coast Annual Seminar – a fitting occasion to recognise those who have made such a big contribution to the Dorset and East Devon Coast World Heritage SIte.
The Jurassic Coast Award was open to anyone who had shown an outstanding dedication to the conservation and enhancement of the Dorset and East Devon Coast World Heritage Site, whether professional, amateur or volunteer.
The winners were Richard Edmonds, Earth Science Manager, Jurassic Coast Team and Norah Jaggers and Patricia Farrell, from the community group Beer Village Heritage, Devon
Richard was commended for his “fantastic enthusiasm for the World Heritage Site, the coastline and its geology and for the way he conveyed this “in a most enlightening manner”.
Norah and Pat who co-chair the management of the Fine Foundation Centre, Beer were praised for the “improvement and continual development of the centre, with its focus on Beer’s place on the Jurassic Coast together with information about the wider World Heritage Site”
The awards were beautiful ‘cubes’ of Purbeck stone inscribed with locations along the Jurassic Coast, created by the artist and sculptor Gary Breeze, with sponsorship from the Fine Family Foundation.
The awards were presented by Sibyl King, Director of the Fine Family Foundation which initiated the awards, and Professor Denys Brunsden, the originator of the Dorset and East Devon Coast World Heritage Site.
