We are currently working in partnership with the Regional Language Network South West (RLN SW) and with language assistants and students from Sir John Colfox School, Bridport, to improve the offer for overseas visitors to the Jurassic Coast.
The improved offer includes recorded podcasts in French, Spanish and Mandarin, with the intention to follow on with Dutch and other languages spoken by contestants taking part in the 2012 Games.
Sir John Colfox School is a language specialist college and provides a wide range of opportunities for language learning and travel abroad. The school recognises that modern foreign languages have an important role to play in today’s society both at work and for leisure.
A generic text document introducing the Jurassic Coast (based on an existing German podcast written and recorded by a former German internship student) was used. This was translated and recorded by the language assistants into French, Spanish and Mandarin.
Podcasts are an easy, user friendly and economic way to reach overseas visitors who may be planning a visit to the Jurassic Coast. We can more readily add to this type of information resource than we can with more traditional formats.
We are now planning to deliver a workshop for language students at Colfox School with RLN SW and a local business, to help students design and produce a leaflet promoting the Jurassic Coast in three languages.
