A new book on the geology of the East Devon coast was launched last week. Published by the Jurassic Coast Trust the guide describes the rocks and landscapes of the World Heritage coast from its western end at Exmouth to near Lyme Regis – a part of the coast dominated by red rocks and informally called the Red Coast. The book is lavishly illustrated with maps and beautiful colour photographs of the geology along this wonderful stretch of coast.
Written by Dr Richard Edwards, with a foreword by Dr Iain Stewart, geologist, author and television presenter, the book has support from the Devon County Council, Exmouth Town Council and Natural England. It was launched by special guest Andrew Cooper, naturalist and broadcaster last Thursday at the offices of Clinton Devon Estates at Bicton Arena. Also present was Richard Edwards who signed copies of his book for guests, together with trustees from the Jurassic Coast Trust, local councillors and partners and members of Devon County Council’s Countryside Team who exhibited the Devon Rocks display in celebration of International Year of Planet Earth. The Exmouth and Seaton banners also provided a stunning backdrop.
The book makes for a lively and fascinating read. For those embarking along this very special piece of coast, this isn’t so much a geological field guide but, rather, an essential travelling companion. It is available from bookshops, Tourist Information Centres and Visitor Centres along the Jurassic Coast from Bournemouth to Exeter. The proceeds from the Jurassic Coast Trust’s suite of publications goes to the Trust to support education, conservation, arts, science, and sustainable development projects along the Jurassic Coast.
